Dr. Hans-Peter Bartels has been the interim head of the Center for Security and Defense at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) since October 2024, while also serving as President of the Society for Security Policy (GSP). Previously, he was the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces in the German Bundestag. Bartels brings extensive expertise in security policy and a robust network to his role at DGAP. He will play a pivotal role in the strategic reorientation of DGAP’s Center for Security and Defense, focusing on the future of the European security order, Western defense cooperation, and strengthening German defense through integrated security concepts.
